Spring Door Decor Inspiration┃Take Your Door from Plain to Pretty!
I will cover the BASIC way to spruce up your plain door, how to ENHANCE it up a notch past basic, and finally, ideas for creating a front door that is EXTRA, for those of you who love to go over the top!
BASIC Door Tips:
Rug(s) + Plant(s): A plain door can be simply enhanced with a pretty doormat and a plant. The easiest way to achieve this minimal, classic look is to use a set of doormats (some are even sold together!) and one or two planters. It looks a bit more formal to use two, matching planters flanking the door, if that is your style. One can look great too! This may also depend on the space you have available around your front door.
If you want to choose your own flowers to plant in your plant pot, you are able to create a unique look and coordinate the colors to your home/door/doormat. If this brings you JOY, great! Planting flowers is high on my own JOY List! If this seems stressful, but you still want a nice-looking Spring front door, no problem, read on!
An easy option that always looks good is to use a fern. You can find them at any greenhouse or home improvement store. We typically buy ours from Lowe’s in the Spring. They are around $13! Then, you can either pot the fern in your decorative planter, or just set the pot it came in down in your planter. Easy! Just don’t forget to water it every day or two!
Another simple option is to use a pre-potted container of flowers. This will likely be a little bit more expensive than choosing your own flowers, but if you do not enjoy choosing flowers and planting them, this can be an excellent option. An expert has already selected a beautiful combination of flowers and plants for you to enjoy! Make sure you note how much sun your front door receives, as this will be important information as you select a mixed pot of flowers.

Inspiration:
Below is a gorgeous example of the impact a rug and flowers or plants have on your front door. I love the baskets with hydrangeas and the terra cotta pot combo. Simple and beautiful!
Choosing hydrangea, boxwoods, or other perennials allows you to enjoy them in your decorative containers, then plant them in the ground in the fall! This is a great way to save money and not spend so much on annuals that are only going to last one season. I plan to plant the boxwoods from my pictures into our landscape at the end of the season.

ENHANCED Door Tips:
Rugs + Multiple Plants + Wreath(s): If you want to level up your Spring door decor, you can incorporate more than one decorative planter on each side, layer a rug and doormat, and hang a wreath or swag for an additional accent.
Two pair of matching planters flanking your front door creates a dramatic statement. One set of planters should be fairly tall, and the other medium to short. The contrast will be visually pleasing. When choosing planters, consider the color of your home and door. A contrasting color will have the most dramatic impact. Do not choose small pots as your only door decor. They will look too small in comparison to your door. However, they can be paired with taller pots for height variation.
Layered rugs definitely take your average doormat up a notch in the decor department. When selecting a size of rug, it will look best if it is close to the same width of your door plus any sidelights. The rug will appear too small if it is only in front of your door (if you have sidelights). The mat on top should be several inches less than the rug in both height and width. It is a good idea to measure before purchasing!
Additionally, adding a wreath or swag to the front door creates a beautiful welcoming feeling. Consider the colors of your wreath, plants, flowers, and doormat to ensure a pleasing palate. When in doubt, go with neutral doormats and green plants! You can’t go wrong.
In the picture below, the pair of green fern wreaths adds a pretty element to the already soothing palate of colors.

EXTRA Door Tips:
Rugs + Multiple Plants + Wreath(s) + Addional Decor: If you like to go over the top and make a major statement, consider adding in additional decor elements to your display. Choose your rugs, planters, wreath, and then have fun decorating around the space in a similar way as you would indoors.
A few ideas for additional spring door decor include lanterns, chairs, baskets or antique pieces. You could also display vintage crocks, decorative watering cans, or any of your favorite decor that is safe outdoors! Adding in a few fun pieces takes your door from BASIC to EXTRAORDINARY!
Below, the owner chose to display ferns on a matching set of chairs, and in other pots. The floral swag on the door and bright yellow doormat layered over a black and white stripe rug add a fun touch. The repetitive ferns create consistency, without making the area look too busy.

Depending on the layout of your front door area, it may work better to place your planters away from the door. A pair of beautiful planters greeting guests as they step up toward the door is an excellent option for high impact. In the picture below, there is high formality with pairs of flowering trees, a walkway lined with boxwoods, and matching planters. The annuals planted at the base of the planters and basket nearby add a nice touch.

Below is a beautiful example of combining all the recommended elements for spring door decor. It is done in a way that is coordinated, but not overkill. For instance, the repeating black and white elements contrasting with the green ferns and wreath are simple choices, but high-impact. Finally, adding a lantern is the extra touch to this beautiful display.

Both the White and Hickory planters are great because they look like a beautiful, heavy, natural material, but are actually lightweight composite! This means it is a lot easier for me to move them around, which is what I like to do.

I hope you found inspiration to create a beautiful Spring Door for your home. Whether you prefer the basic look of a rug + plant, or like to elevate your look with addional decor, putting in a little effort to your home entry will bring a smile to guests’ and your face!
