Plants Over Here, Over There and Everywhere
Is it a millennial trend? COVID home therapy? Hippie/Boho thing? Creative entertainment?
All of the above? Maybe…probably…
Whatever the reason, pandemic plant popularity has hit, and I hope it is here to stay!
There is a major plant party going on right now. They are everywhere. People cannot get enough. Plants at the grocery store, the nursery, home improvement stores, antique stores, online. You can get a live plant on Amazon for crying out loud! It cannot get any easier to bring a live plant into our homes.
Here is my take on why plants have exploded and grown out of control (pun intended)!
We have been home so much more this past year than ever before. We are looking around our homes all day every day. The news is often discouraging and depressing, giving us all the more reason to find HOPE and LIFE wherever we can.
Where can we look for a sign of life, even when our days are gloomy and difficult? Plants! They are living things, right here in our homes, that can bring us JOY. Think about it, it is beautiful home decor, that changes and grows! If you take care of your plants, they will reward you with luscious leaves, new growth and (sometimes) gorgeous blossoms.

Design Trend
What is your design style? (think answer) Great news! Plants will work for you!
Many people’s design style does not fit into one particular category. Personally, I like a little boho, some farmhouse, Scandanavian, transitional, mixed with some industrial. It can be fun to mix the old and the new. An antique piece of furniture next to a shiny new lamp. An old crock with a beautiful green plant. Most people desire their homes to feel cozy, warm, inviting, and pleasing to the eye. Plants help achieve all of these things. Win, win!
Bringing in a lot of plants to the home is definitely “on trend”. Millennials (many working from home) love them, plant accounts on social media are booming, and aspiring green-thumbs have finally conceded because they were home, and could finally give plants the attention they deserved.
What I have learned from studying different design styles, and looking at pictures of every style from traditional to modern and everything in-between, is that they ALL include plants! This is great news! It makes is easier for all of us. Plants work for literally everyone. All styles, all the time, forever and ever. Amen.

What I really love about the increase in pandemic plant popularity is that it can bridge a gap between any two people or groups. Aren’t we all looking for ways to create more peace and harmony? Or is that just the Enneagram 9 in me? 😉 It doesn’t matter what your living situation, political affiliation, design preference, or skill level is, anyone can love plants. It is something small (well, sometimes large) that can bring us together. Two people with completely different viewpoints on most issues may both love plants. How cool. If this isn’t a reason to have plants in your home, then I don’t know what is.
Next time you are at the grocery store and see the live plants section, take one or two home with you. If you are shopping online, add a plant to your order. It will feel so good to have something living, growing, and changing right before your eyes. It will bring life to your home and JOY to you and your family.
And don’t forget to water it. But not too much. 😉
